Every summer for the past 22 years, a colourful, open cultural space is created on the banks of the Main in Frankfurt. For 17 days, theatre and music come to the street – and take place where real life happens. The Sommerwerft stands for an open theatre culture, for social togetherness, diversity and cohesion – and this atmosphere is created not least by the many hundreds of volunteers who get the Werft up and running.
Nevertheless, the Sommerwerft costs money. Infrastructure, technology, fees – without all that, no event takes place.
And that’s exactly what could happen this year, because there is not enough public funding for the Sommerwerft 2023: at the moment, three months before the festival starts, a substantial amount of the necessary funds are missing.
