Every summer for the past 25 years, a colourful, open cultural space is created on the banks of the Main in Frankfurt. For 17 days, theatre and music come to the street – and take place where real life happens. The Sommerwerft stands for an open theatre culture, for social togetherness, diversity and cohesion – and this atmosphere is created not least by the many hundreds of volunteers who get the Werft up and running.
Nevertheless, the Sommerwerft costs money. Infrastructure, technology, fees – without all that, no event takes place.

Why donate?
Our ideas of culture and theatre for all, donation-based admission, fair pay for artists and enabling cultural events in rural areas or socially deprived areas, can only be pursued and adhered to as uncompromisingly and consistently as we have been trying to do with the Sommerwerft for 24 years now if we have the necessary support from politicians and the general public. This is not the first time that we have lacked the financial resources to guarantee all this. Through collective willpower and inventiveness, we have never cancelled a Sommerwerft even under the toughest conditions. Sustainable solutions are needed to maintain this festival under the premise of “Culture for All”.
