Summer of culture in public space

20 years of Sommerwerft

The desire to finally experience culture, performing arts, artistic moments is clearly perceptible. At the same time, local artists in particular are suffering from the pandemic. With the Kultursommer, protagon e.V. wants to counteract this and finally offer artistic encounters in public space again: A multitude of diverse events will take place on 36 focus days from the beginning of July to the end of September.

The main focus is the 20th anniversary of the Sommerwerft festival. For the festival’s birthday from the 23rd of July to the 8th of August, the organizers have put the regional cultural scene in the spotlight: “90% of the performances will be by artists from Frankfurt and Hessen, selected through an open-call process,” explains Bernhard Bub, artistic director of the festival. Interested artists from the fields of theater, dance, music and performance can apply via our application form from the 1st of May. Information about our Open Call for artists. A special stage will be set aside for indoor productions, offering the opportunity to adapt works from the regional scene for the open air.

Also children and youth theater, organized by the Theaterhaus Ensemble with its own stage, is planned for 9 days. In addition to the performances, workshops and educational events at the Sommerwerft, the festival, in collaboration with antagon TheaterAKTion also wants to take the theater to the neighborhoods for 12 days: “We will especially choose areas in the periphery for our mobile theater, where access to cultural offerings is otherwise difficult.”

Of course in the best tradition of our birthday child Sommerwerft, we are again very much looking forward to numerous participations from the people of Frankfurt. The idea of a Sommerwerft by Frankfurters for Frankfurters, or simply by people for people, remains central. You are cordially invited to shape the summer together with us culturally and to participate again in the Sommwerft.
