Nach langem Rechtskampf der Māori erkannte die neuseeländische Regierung 2017 dem Whanganui River den Status einer juristischen Person an. Der Fluss ist erst die zweite natürliche Ressource, der dies gelang. Seitdem können offiziell eingesetzte Wächter im Namen des Whanganui River zum Beispiel gegen Verschmutzungen klagen, ohne eine Schädigung Dritter nachweisen zu müssen. Von Ned Tapa, einem der Guardians, geführt gleitet die Dokumentation im Kanu auf der Lebensader flussabwärts.

Following a long legal battle fought by the Māori, the New Zealand government recognised the Whanganui River as a legal person in 2017. The river is only the second natural resource to achieve this. Since then, officially appointed guardians have been able to take legal action on behalf of the Whanganui River – for example, against pollution – without having to prove harm to third parties. Led by Ned Tapa, one of the guardians, the documentary journeys downstream in a canoe along this lifeline.
